That may be a factor, but the UK has other Caribbean carnivals that do not seem to have the same level of crime and disorder as Notting Hill. Jamaica is an interesting comparison. Around independence it had a very low murder rate, but over the following decades became one of the world’s higher-homicide countries and also fell well behind economically. Singapore, by contrast, became independent with very few natural resources and serious social and economic problems, yet developed into one of the safest and most prosperous countries in the world. It is obviously not a like-for-like comparison, but it does suggest that the culture and people driving institutions, governance and policy matter at least as much as natural resources or the legacy of colonialism.

You criticised my evidence as outdated. When invited to provide better evidence, you now say you don't care what the evidence shows because residents should simply move. So the objection was not really methodological after all. It is your personal value judgement that Carnival takes precedence over resident objections - which is fair enough as we all have our opinions. But...I haven't advocated banning the Carnival, so “don't be a killjoy” once again answers an argument I didn't make.

I understand the objection. But that isn't what I claimed. I explicitly described the survey as being about a decade old and cited a separate consultation from the same period because it produced more mixed results. If your point is that decade-old polling cannot establish what residents think in 2026, I agree and never said that it could. Historical evidence can still be relevant to a current discussion; it simply shouldn't be presented as current polling. If you have a more recent comparable survey of residents, I'd be interested to see it.
