On a flight years ago I was sitting in the very front row. Nearing the end of the flight, in preparation for landing, two air hostesses strapped themselves into their seats facing me.

They were carrying on a conversation about their uniforms which soon turned specifically to stockings. The junior flight attendant asked her senior colleague what stockings she wore as she thought they looked better than the ones worn by most of the other girls. The older lady replied that they were the "old fashioned" type that didn't stretch and told her where she bought them. The conversation continued until we came to a halt outside the terminal.

I was grateful to be within earshot, to have such a great view of her RHT encased legs and to be wearing mirror sunglasses.

Many years ago I went for a job interview to a school in Newbury. Whilst waiting in the staffroom, I was entertained by a group of younger teachers who were discussing going down the pub that evening. They were all planning on wearing stockings, to attract attention.

It was a pleasant experience. Sadly, I was not successful at that particular interview.

Hopefully this counts even though I only heard about the conversation after the event, firstly from my wife and then later from our male friend involved.

Mrs B and I had been invited to a wedding abroad where I was to be best man.  Other mutual friends were invited including a couple we’d both known for years and Mrs B had worked with the female half (let’s call her ‘X’) and I with the man (‘Y’).  We all knew each other well and had often socialised.

Mrs B looked especially divine in a fitted maroon knee length dress under which she was donning a pair of WKD nude stockings with a maroon contrast seam and so looked very striking.

I am told that X had commented Mrs B on her choice of hosiery telling her that she really liked her tights whilst they were stood around before the wedding.  After the ceremony whilst I was engaged with other duties, X, Y and Mrs B we’re walking to the lift.  X again complimented Mrs B  on her tights and asked where they were from.  Knowing that X was a confirmed tights wearer (from when they’d worked together), Mrs B told her that X wouldn’t like them.  X assured her that she did and would like to get some for herself and kept probing Mrs B as to where her tights were from as the three of them entered a lift together.  Mrs B continued to tell her that she wouldn’t like them.  Eventually Mrs B tells me she just ended up blurting that “they’re not tights, they’re stockings”.  X then said in front of her husband’s ever reddening face “oh, the type you wear with a suspender belt? Are you wearing suspenders now?” which Mrs B has to concede in front of my mate.  X then continued to explain how she hated all stockings and hold ups and would never wear them much to Y’s frustration (as he later related to me).

Nope. However, I have talked about them with others so someone else may have heard me talking!

Back in the days when every woman wore stockings it was an every-day occurrence to hear them being talked about.  Much more recently, probably in around 1995-98, we had a friend and his somewhat younger "lady friend" visiting us for lunch.  She was slim and attractive and our pet cat was taking an interest in her.  I moved the cat away saying I was worried in case it laddered her tights and was surprised when she said, quite casually that they were actually stockings.  It was summer time and the woman wore a pretty summer dress. I couldn't help wondering, as she moved around our house and garden, what she was using to hold them up....it's possible, but unlikely at that time, that they were hold-ups.

Much further back, in the mid 1960s, I was with a group of friends who were students at a horticultural college.  Some of the girls were discussing their mode of dress at college.  Their course involved both lectures and practical sessions in gardens and greenhouses.  One girl said she always changed from skirt and stockings into trousers for the practical work but the girl I was sitting alongside said she didn't bother to change because if she took her stockings off she would also have to take off "the thing that holds them up" (presumably a roll-on or girdle) and that was too much trouble.

Last winter at a golf club dinner dance, I overheard one lady ask another that she liked her t***ts  to which the first lady said there are stockings and promptly lifted the hem of her dress to reveal lacy top stockings and black suspender straps!

Must be something about golf dinner dances and parties.

The last time we attended one about 2 months ago, my wife was wearing suspender belt and seamed stockings.

One lady asked her about them and my wife announced they were stockings. The lady said "wasn't that a little old fashioned".

No my wife said they were bought in England, which they were, and what was old at one time was nice and new again and quietly lifted her skirt to show her suspender belt.

Perhaps the lady will try again next time.
