Stockings Hq Forum Terms And Conditons

59 posts in this topic

At the risk of being ridiculed, I'm sorry, but I have to say I think this has gotten out of hand.  I'm honestly surprised David and StockingsHQ haven't had enough and just said, "Fine, you don't appreciate this, then the forum is now closed."  I do have to say I am VERY happy they have not gotten to that point, though.  I enjoy the few times I get to come on here and see what's going on, however this constant bickering about this one person and how much the forum costs to run is getting ridiculous.  Most of us are probably not in the business, so we don't know what a reasonable cost for a forum is.  Really, it's none of our business, either.  SHQ has graciously provided this to all of us free of charge, to which I am VERY grateful.

I'm sorry if my comments offend anyone, but I for one am growing tired of some people feeling they need to have the last word.

Of course the Forum is a useful adjunct to the SHQ business, or it wouldn't be there. Difficult enough running any small/medium-sized business these days, and David will be looking at every outgoing to see whether it's VFM.

If we value the Forum, it's in our hands to see that operates as a lively and attractive place to visit (after all, we should be experts at lively and attractive) and not something that might turn vistors off.

My own interpretation of this is that stupid, rude or pointlessly provocative posts should simply be walked away from, and definitely not responded to. The perpetrators often seem oddly similar to bullies and attention-seekers, and the remedy is probably similar. Abusive posts should naturally be reported, but not responded to, IMHO.

Absolutely right Chrissie, if it was up to me i'd bin the off-topic forum, why is it needed, if you want to talk politics or any old crap like most of the well known perpetrators then talk to the wall, if its stockings chat then join in and contribute rather than just posting stupid one-liners and other needless crap.

Just my opinion....

OT has been present at SHQ for at least 12 years (threads from 2004 can be found in online archives), and has enjoyed many fine contributors and interesting debates. Plenty of forums have OTs.

I would imagine David created OT to prevent the main forum from being diluted. Unfortunately, the main forum has been diluted by non-nylon subjects in recent months; navel-gazing threads about specific users, or groups of users, their right to post and so on and so forth.

So I would suggest that whilst some of the posters who most divide opinion may frequent OT, it is not OT that is the problem.

While I'd never deny the fact that it's handy that there's a shop next door when forum visitors are looking for the go-to hosiery retailer of choice, the forums are not, and never have been, commercially motivated.

As those who have been round since the start can testify, the site began as a discussion/chat site. The shop was never in the original plan. The site was launched in May 2000. The first products for sale were some Gio seconds 15 months later in August 2001. Other products and brands did not appear until later in 2001, once the Gio had sold out.

When the database died in February 2009 and I had the choice of keeping the forums open or the shop open, I chose the forums. The shop was completely shut for 10 days with zero revenue despite needing to pay around a dozen members of staff.

Incidentally, since the very beginning I've heard the same complaints: it's not as good as it used to be; all the good posters have left; the new version of the software is rubbish. I'm biased towards/against particular posters or particular gender groups. And so it goes on.

I'm sorry but like any community these things are ever evolving. While I deeply regret losing touch with some of the regular correspondents who have disappeared over the years, so I am exceptionally pleased to see new people arrive on a regular basis.

We could be all hard-nosed and commercial about things and do what other sites do. We could close the forums and save the money. Yes we may lose a few sales in the process. But the reduction in cost and vast amount of time saved would more than make up for that. And if you don't believe me, ask yourself why none of the other sites have forums...

(Incidentally we could charge the same prices worldwide like many other sites do, rather than removing the VAT if you're outside the EU. If you're reading this from outside Europe and even thinking of placing an order anywhere else, make sure they remove the VAT or you're getting overcharged by 20% and they're pocketing the extra as pure profit. It now seems to be the norm which I find outrageous.)

The original aim of the site was to encourage a stockings revival. That hasn't changed. Rightly or wrongly I believe that maintaining the forums is the best way to do that, and as the growth of the shop has meant I am in a position to subsidise the forums to keep them running that's exactly what I do.

Believe me, I'd get a lot more sleep if I closed them down. But I have no intention of doing that. I still think the original mission is a valid and noble cause and I am exceptionally proud of the site - not because of anything that I have done but because of all those who come together to contribute in such a wonderful way about a subject that we all hold so very dear.

:) That puts things nicely in perspective, David.   Thank you for both your ambition & not least your perseverance.

I'll happily contribute a nominal monthly amount to the upkeep of the SHQ forums.  My offer is without condition.

Who else is prepared to step up and do the same?

Just joined this thread. I agree with Dayna- even a meagre £10 per month from members would more than cover costs.

David,

On many occasions I have expressed my deep felt thanks for providing this superlative, unique place.

Through it I've made very many "virtual" friends who I respect and who just give so much happiness to so many.

Unfortunately, some idiots and trolls slink in but they seem to get the boot- often through derision from members.

I'm a businessman like you: if the forums make economic sense, fine; if they break even, fine; if you are cross subsidising then that is not fair.

There are many regular members/ contributors: can I suggest that you poll members as to whether they'd make a monthly contribution: £10 per month for me would be miniscule for the happiness and fun I derive- that's only a couple of glasses of wine, a couple of pints of beer, a seventh of a hairdo.

If enough people were prepared to subscribe it could go down to a fiver a month.

The forums are so good it would be a calamity were they to be lost.

Dayna, as always, speaks true commonsense and I wholeheartedly support her.

Goodness, her DNOs and Violet's descriptions are without price. And then add all the others who know I applaud them but I won't name in case my memory fails.

And were you to take subscriptions that could deter idiots and trolls....

While I appreciate that all forums require funding, I have to ask what value is there in paying toward the SHQ forum where most of the topics within the posts on the TV/Media page are derived from the open media and now it appears that according to localbobby all content within the internet is now fair game. (see posting entitled "dog walker" )

Some clarification would be appreciated before there is an influx of porn site derived postings.

Also, members openly post pics of themselves or their good ladies for all of us to appreciate, but once that privilege requires a fee to be paid then this opens up many questions on picture ownership, liability for the content and its distribution. A hornets nest just waiting to be abused even more than the site is already.

The full Forum terms and conditions can be found here:

In addition, we have created this code of conduct:

The discussion forums are the flagship of the site. However, new visitors can be put off by the sheer (a pun, haha) volume of contributions and not quite know where to start.

Forum topics and aims

The six forums have different aims and objectives, but the same rules. Here's a breakdown of what they cover:

The main forum: This is the best place to discuss all generic stockings issues including their cultural significance, place in society, and general chat about anything not covered elsewhere! The main forum is frequently hilarious, occasionally bad-tempered, but always compelling. Do not be afraid to join in, but please bear in mind the general posting rules, below!

The international forum: This is for all non-English language posts. It's a bit like the main forum but in Spanish, French, German, Norwegian, Italian, Swedish, etc. Please remember - views expressed in all of the forums are those of the individual contributor - not those of Stockings HQ!

The outfits/sightings forum: Spotted stockings in the high street? Or just dressing to impress? This is the place to see and be seen!

The product forum: This is the forum to discuss and give feedback on specific brands and styles of stockings and associated items of clothing.

The male issues forum: This is the place for men who wear stockings to discuss the issues that arise. It is not a seedy pick-up joint! Explicit messages and pornographic fantasies will be deleted, and user names and IP numbers banned. Please be considerate.

The off-topic forum: What's in a name? Ironically nothing is off-topic in the off-topic forum, with the usual caveats about not posting anything libellous, defamatory, obscene or illegal.

General posting guidelines

In general the forums are self-regulating although there are admins to step in when things get out of hand. There are very few guidelines and very few subjects are taboo. However, to ensure the smooth running of the site there are a few basic guidelines we ask you to observe.

DO NOT post anything illegal, obscene, defamatory or libellous. Similarly, do not post anything which breaches the copyright of another.

DO NOT post cross dressing or outfit/sightings messages in the main forum. There is a place for those further down the corridor. Do not post pantyhose sightings in the sightings forum as you're kind of missing the point.

DO NOT reply to your own post just in order to bump it back up to the top of the page. If there's nothing new to add, please use the private message system instead.

Stockings HQ isn't an adult site, so we ask that you don't post adult material. However please do not raise the thorny of subject of stockings worn by girls under the age of 18 as you will be deleted!

Please respect other people who take time to contribute. We are all here for one reason: a love of classic hosiery. Heated debate is good but off-topic personal abuse has no place on Stockings HQ and will be deleted. Please report any offensive messages you see by clicking on the "Repost Post" link at the end of it.

Remember, views expressed are those of the individual contributor, and not necessarily those of Stockings HQ. We reserve the right to delete messages that could cause us trouble!

By posting a message you assign rights to reproduce it in any form to Stockings HQ. Occasionally messages on a similar thread are edited together to form articles for display elsewhere on the site.

Please report any problems immediately by using the "report post" function (a button on the right hand side at the bottom of posts) and tell us, very briefly, what the problem is. In an emergency please call the warehouse on 01462 677970.

Please remember: those who break the rules may well have their messages deleted and/or have their account closed and IP number blocked.

To keep yourself safe, we advise you not to put your personal contact information on the forums, or to give it out to others. If you do, please follow sensible safety precautions.

That's it! This page will be amended from time to time but it is never supposed to be onerous. Enjoy the forums and share the passion!
